Tea Party movement

Announced on April 8, 2010

A broad coalition of national and regional Tea Party groups have announced the formation of the National Tea Party Federation (NTPF). The NTPF is established to create a unified message and media response amongst key leadership and their affiliates. At the same time, the NTPF will act as a clearinghouse and to promote the Tea Party movement’s objectives of:

  • Fiscal Responsibility
  • Constitutionally Limited Government
  • Free Markets

Activists in the Tea Party movement tend to be male, rural, upscale, and overwhelmingly conservative, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Wednesday also indicates that Tea Party activists would vote overwhelmingly Republican in a two-party race for Congress. The party’s GOP leanings, the poll suggests, may pose a problem for the Tea Party movement if it tries to turn itself into a third party to compete with the two major parties in this year’s general election.

Obama on Arizona’s immigration bill

At a Rose Garden ceremony swearing in 24 immigrant members of the U.S. military as citizens, President Obama made his first direct comments on Arizona’s controversial immigration bill.

Obama said, “Our failure to act responsible at the federal level will only open the door to irresponsibility by others. That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona which threaten to undermined basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”

The president said he has instructed his administration “to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation.”

“But if we continue to fail to act at the federal level,” he said, “we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country.”

Those not aware of the recent immigration bill, the bill will allow Arizona police to assume who is an illegal immigrant and prosecute them within the confines of Arizona state.
